Power of the Creator vs. Devils: An Islamic Scholar's View

His tools are smaller than people imagine. He cannot force your hand. He cannot open your mouth. He cannot drag your eyes to where you refuse to look. The Qur'an describes his method in surprisingly narrow language. "He whispers in the breasts of people" (Qur'an 114:5). That is it. He suggests. He nudges. He dresses a bad idea in attractive colors.

The Prophet ﷺ said Shaytan flows in a person "like the flowing of blood in their veins." That sounds close and frightening until you notice what the image really shows. Blood flow is invisible and passive. It is not a weapon in the hand of the blood itself. Shaytan has access to your inner chatter. He has no access to your steering wheel.

Here the balance becomes obvious. Allah is al-Khaliq, the Creator. He brings into being. He sustains what exists. He knows what you whisper to yourself in the shower and what grief sits in a widow's chest at three in the morning. He holds the galaxies in their orbits and the electrons in their shells.

Shaytan creates nothing. He cannot make a seed sprout, a heart beat, or a single drop of rain fall. He depends on a world already built by Allah and reacts to it. When you ask, "Who is stronger?" you are asking a question that has no contest in it. A worker does not out-muscle the one who built the whole factory and signs his paycheck.

The Qur'an puts it in one sharp sentence. "Indeed, the plot of Shaytan is weak" (Qur'an 4:76). Weak, not strong. Weak, not clever beyond defeat. Weak.

If all of that is true, why do so many of us lose ground to temptation? The answer is not that the devil is powerful. The answer is that a whisper only needs a willing listener. He does not break down the door. He waits for you to open it.

Think of the last time you knew you should sleep, and instead you kept scrolling. No one held your phone for you. The whisper said, "Five more minutes." Five became forty. That was not supernatural force. That was a small voice you agreed with.

This is the pattern. The devil does not overpower. He over-persuades. Persuasion only works on someone who has not decided yet.

The Messenger of Allah gave simple, practical tools. When you feel that itch of anger, he said, seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. If you are standing, sit. If sitting, lie down. Make wudu. The heat drops.

Before sleep, he taught Aisha to recite the last three short chapters of the Qur'an: al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and al-Nas. These chapters form a spiritual gate. They name the Creator, affirm His oneness, and place the whisperer, the envier, and the darkness under His authority.

He also told us that the name of Allah, said before entering the home, before eating, before sleep, before any task, shuts the door on Shaytan's participation. Not because the letters carry magic. Because the name acknowledges the ownership of the moment. What belongs to Allah cannot be annexed by another.

Read Ayat al-Kursi (Qur'an 2:255) and notice the reach of the language. "His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not." That is the stature of the Creator. Every narrative of shaytanic influence in the Qur'an is framed by verses like this one, which keep the reader oriented.

The final chapter of the Qur'an, al-Nas, is even more direct. "I seek refuge in the Lord of people, the King of people, the God of people, from the evil of the whispering withdrawer" (Qur'an 114:1-4). Notice the title the devil gets: "the withdrawer." The moment you remember Allah, he backs away. He is built to retreat.

If you are coming to Islam from the outside, this teaching might sound strange or a little superstitious. Let me put it plainly. Islam does not ask you to live in fear of an invisible enemy. It asks you to live in awareness of a visible Creator. The two feelings are opposite.

Fear of unseen evil often produces anxiety, paranoia, and a sense that the world is out to get you. Awareness of the Creator produces steadiness. You are watched, yes. But you are watched by the One who fashioned you, forgives you, and invites you every moment to come back.

The devil, in this view, is not the scariest character in the story. He is the smallest. He gets page space because our weaknesses give him page space. Reduce the weakness, and he shrinks.

New Muslims often ask about black magic, jinn possession, and the evil eye because these topics come up in Muslim cultures. The short answer is that these things exist in Islamic teaching, but they all operate under the same limits as any other shaytanic activity. They cannot override Allah's will. They cannot last against consistent prayer, remembrance, and the reading of protective verses.

The Prophet ﷺ himself was once affected by magic. He sought refuge in Allah, recited the protective chapters, and the effect lifted. If the Messenger of Allah faced such a test and responded with prayer rather than panic, the lesson for the rest of us is clear. We respond the same way.

If you want to live this teaching rather than just read about it, try these. None of them require a degree in theology.

Say the name of Allah before what you do. Eating, driving, writing, teaching, all of it. This habit pulls your day out of the hands of the whisperer and into the hands of the Creator.

Pray the five daily prayers with care. Each prayer is a reset. The mind gathers. The body bows. The heart remembers. Five times a day, the whisperer has to start over.

When an intrusive thought hits, say, "A'udhu billahi min al-Shaytan al-rajeem," which means "I seek refuge in Allah from the rejected devil." Do not argue with the thought. Dismiss it toward its owner.

Keep company with people who remember Allah. The crowd around you shapes what sounds reasonable to you.

Read the Qur'an in small daily portions. Even a page. Even half a page. The book is a light source, and Shaytan does not operate well in a lit room.

There is a verse that settles a lot of noise. After the Day of Judgment, Shaytan will stand and address those who followed him. "Allah promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you, then failed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves" (Qur'an 14:22).

Read that once more. On his own tongue, at the end of time, the devil confesses: I had no authority. I only called. You came.

The power of the Creator vs. devils was never a fair fight because it was never a fight at all. It was a test. The Creator gave you permission to choose. The devil used that permission to advertise. The Creator also gave you the antidote: remembrance, prayer, community, scripture.

People new to Islam sometimes feel they need to master every detail of spiritual warfare before they can breathe easy. You do not. Start with belief. Say the shahadah with meaning. Establish prayer. Learn the short chapters at the end of the Qur'an. Make the name of Allah a habit on your tongue.

Shaytan does not hold a key to your heart. Allah does. That is the whole teaching, stripped to the bone. The power of the Creator vs. devils is settled, archived, and available to anyone willing to lean into it.
